HISTORY and TRIBUTE

First and foremost, I want to thank my mother Helène, she indeed bought me my very first Afghan when I was 15 years old, the beginning of a long story. Eventhough she has never been active in our breeding program, her support along the years has been unvaluable.

As said, I had my first Afghan back in 1979 and a couple of  unsuccessful breeding at that time, I really decided it was time to start a serious breeding program in 1995. Then, I had just moved to Spain and started a new life with facilities and time to start this new experience.

I was lucky along the years to have met a lot of knowledgeable people and mentors. My first mentor was Norman HUIDOBRO of  the famous HUILACO'S kennel based in Spain. Norman not only tought me the essence of the breed but was also the breeder of Raquel, a black bitch whom was to become my first champion.

A couple of years later I met Dominique DANEL of TCHEKANA kennel in France. And was amazed with the type she was working with, this was what I liked and wanted to have. At this point I have to mention Dominique had imported quite a few dogs from June BOONE (KASSAN) from the USA, all of this exquisite type I have been trying to keep since and then breed.

So all these years, I was busy showing dogs for mostly Dominique and owning some of them . Breeding was not a purpose at that time and I was happy to be able to choose almost any of her dogs to show and/or own.In fact, all of my dogs today goes back to these original imports, and generation after generation, I learned qualities and faults of these lines. As of today, I know the background of my dogs up to 7 generations and this is one of the key to success in breeding. Since i really started breeding in 1995, I have had to incorporate fresh blood into my breeding program with more or less success. Therefore, I never kept nor used the results of a new combination if it was not at least as good as the parents. Afghans can not be mediocre and as the pet market has never been big (thanksfully for the breed), there is no place for "experiences".

I do think we have been successfull also in selecting our puppies and  any of our show prospects have to be of high quality and temperment to go to a show home. This is in two words how we got here today together with Felix. Enjoy your visit and, I hope, our Afghans,

Philippe GALLARDO
